Focus Areas
Kumite (Full-Contact Fighting)
Kyokushin Karate is a realistic martial art built on the full-contact fighting concept also called Kumite or Sparring. Calgary Karate Club focuses on fundamentals combined with footwork drills, form refinement, striking accuracy and defensive skills that will help the student during Kumite. Full-contact sparring in Kyokushin is considered the ultimate test of strength, endurance, techniques and spirit.
Controlled Sparring
Controlled sparing is an essential part of school training program. Sparring in a controlled environment along with protective gear ( gloves, shin protectors and headgear) allows for students to apply tactics and principles they have learned safely and constructively. Sparring builds confidence in one's training and further improves discipline, reaction, speed and fortitude.
Kihon (Fundamentals )
The term Kihon (Fundamentals) refers to basic techniques that are taught and practiced at Calgary Karate Club with the purpose to become a second nature for the Kyokushin student. It includes the practice of correct body form and breathing while practicing basics such as stances, punches, kicks, blocks, and thrusts. The consistent practice of Kihon is essential in developing fluidity and gives the opportunity for continuos improvement. Kihon builds the foundation of subsequent learning in Kyokushin karate.
Kata
Kata (form) is a pattern of martial arts techniques and movements practised with the purpose to develop the student's ability to execute those techniques and movements in a fluid manner. The goal is to internalize the movements and techniques of a kata so they can be executed and adapted under different circumstances, without thought or hesitation. Kata originally was a teaching and training method by which successful combat techniques were preserved and passed on. Kata, as an art, is about chasing perfection - it holds beauty and grace and can be improved over a lifetime.
Self-Defense
The proper Kyokushin Karate techniques are extremely effective when it comes to self-defense in any type of fight due to the full body contact fighting style.
Private Lessons
We provide uniquely tailored interactive one on one or small group lesson plans that will help students build both combat and fitness skills. Kyokushin Karate is highly technical and requires strength, endurance and a strong spirit to be effective. Corrective actions will be provided for any skill level.
